Following House Officer and SHO jobs in England he obtained his FRCS in 1993 and completed his training in Orthopaedic Surgery and Trauma in Leicester obtaining his FRCS (Tr & Orth) in the year 2000. He was trained in hand surgery in Leicester, followed by fellowships in Derby and Oxford.

He has hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis (hATTR amyloidosis), a rare and potentially fatal disease which causes sticky amyloid protein to build up in organs and around nerves.

Luckily, Mr Heras-Palou was diagnosed earlier and only had mild symptoms such as pins and needles and intermittent numbness. He also experienced some pain, difficulty eating and low blood pressure.
